Our fourth grade went on an inspiring field trip to the Weinberg Center in Frederick last Friday. We had the chance to watch a production of "The Color of Justice." The play was about the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Topeka Surpeme Court case that overturned segregation in public schools. Our fantastic fourth graders were moved by the performance and had lots of questions about this tumultuous time in American history. In February, we will be celebrating diversity in our classroom through a unit about heritage. We will also be studying civil rights in Social Studies.
In addition, a surprise awaited our class as we pulled up the Weinberg Center for our field trip. Emma B. had a special greeting from her dad's work! Check this out!

Great Extra Practice!
Tonight I watched a CNN News special, "Fixing Education." It was a great report on the state of education and how our students can become more successful in the classroom. One section of the program really caught my attention as an at-home tool for extra practice. Khan Academy is an online at-home "tutor," that has millions of videos about math, science, and social studies skills. Endorsed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates's initiative to improve educational achievement in our nation, this free website allows students to work at their own pace to solve problems about almost any topic.
I am sharing this information because it would be a great tool for our fantastic fourth graders to use in order to really master what we learn in class. Check out the website! The most helpful section I found is listed under the browser library heading "Developmental Math." In this section, you will find almost every topic we have worked on in math so far this year!

We've Moved!
Yes, it's true...we are finally in our portable! It was a great start to 2012 for Ms. Fagan's Fantastic Fourth Graders as we got to start fresh in a new classroom. It looks fresh, clean, and bright with a beautiful view of the Great Heron Wetlands.
I want to give a special "THANK YOU" to all the wonderful parents who took time out today to help organize the new space. We were able to get everything in its place. We have new bookcases and bulletin boards. We could not have done it without you! Aagin, thank you for your enormous generosity of time to help make our classroom a new home for leaning.
