A Fantastic Fall Festival!

On Friday, we celebrated fall festivities and Halloween with a schoolwide walk-a-thon and a class party.  Our day began with a fundraising walk to raise awareness about homelessness in Frederick County.  The students paired up with their "little buddies" to walk together around the school.  All the Urbana Hawks soared with pride as we joined as a school coomunity for a common cause.  Look at what great big buddies we have in our class!

The day's fun continued with our class party.  The afternoon was full of tricks and treats!  The students participated in an estimation game, where the winner got to take home a whole tub of candy corn!  We also made spider candy holders out of paper plates and munched on lots of delicious goodies!  A HUGE thank you to all of the class parents, families, and friends who made out Fall Festival Day a success!

One of the Pigskin Geography teams all dressed up for Halloween!

The "Arizona Sparklies" worked together too!

Our Halloween spread of TREATS!

Look at those goodie bags!

Landscape of Egypt

Today we began our study of ancient Egypt!  We read a decision-making story about a boy who lost his brother along the Nile River.  The class learned lots of new vocabulary, such as quarry, oasis, desert, and cataract in order to describe the landscape in Egypt.  Tomorrow, we will begin creating a map of ancient Egypt.  We will be locating geographical features, natural resources, ancient landmarks, and ancient cities.

Check out the link below to try your fate in the story we read today.  There are also great maps to reference and a fun, challenging map game using coordinate grids.

CarrotSticks is here!

After many requests from students, I have the information needed to set-up an account with CarrotSticks.  CarrotSticks is a free, educational website designed to provide rigorous math skills practice.  On this site, students can create their own avatar and compete in fast-paced math games.  Here's how to set-up an account:

  • Go to http://www.carrotsticks.com/urbana7.

  • Click "play now."

  • Create a login username and password.

    • Try using the same username and password that you use for edmodo.  It will be easy to remember!
  • Have Fun!!

  • CarrotSticks is a great way to get extra practice with math facts too!  This will be extremely helpful as we continue with long division and eventually begin our study of fractions, decimals, and percents.  Math facts are the backbone of each!
